Reserves: Print Services
General Reserves Information
Faculty can put books, articles, and class assignments in the Reserve Collection to support their coursework. Students, who are assigned reserve readings, can locate a list of all print reserve material from the blue binders at the Circulation Desk. The lists are arranged alphabetically by professor's last name and then course name/number. The Consuls catalog will also note any books placed on Reserves for the semester. All print reserves are kept at the Circulation Desk.
Reserve material can be checked out at the Circulation Desk with a valid ID card. Most Reserve material is restricted for library use only and is checked out in one-hour periods. Faculty may indicate that their material can go out overnight. Overnight reserves can be checked out Sunday through Friday at 3pm and is due back the next day at 9:00am. Material checked out on Saturday will be due on Sunday at 1:00pm. Fines will be charged at $2.00 per day, per book for any overnight reserve material returned late. Library patrons will be billed for any material lost or not returned.

Faculty Reserves Information
SCSU faculty may place books, photocopies of journal articles, including personal copies, on Reserves throughout the semester. Books from other libraries, reference books and journals can’t be placed on Reserves. Photocopies can be made as long as copyright law is not violated.
Please submit all reserve forms and material at least two weeks before the start of each semester to provide adequate time for the processing of your reserves. Material will be processed in the order that the reserve list was submitted.
All items are kept on Reserves for one semester but can stay on for additional semesters. At the end of each semester you will receive a letter about the status of your reserve material. You can contact the Reserve Desk at 2-5754 to keep the material in the library for another semester. Your personal reserve material can be returned directly to your office via campus mail or you can come in and pickup your material.
RESERVE FACTS TO REMEMBER
- Faculty must fill out a reserve form for each course and submit these forms to the Circulation Desk. Be sure to fill out the form completely and include all books/ articles that will be placed on Reserve. Also, please indicate whether this material can go out overnight or should remain in the library.
- All reserve material will be processed in a timely manner. The library recommends that all required readings be submitted at least two weeks before the start of each semester. Reserve lists are processed in the order that they are received, and the library needs adequate time to process all material before the semester begins.
- All reserve material is kept behind the Circulation Desk to prevent any loss or damage to material. Our reserve service provides all students with immediate access to course assignments. Faculty members are encouraged to place heavily used items on reserve.
- Students will need their student ID to check out reserve material. Only one item can be checked out at a time, with the option to renew for an additional hour.
- Reference, bound and unbound periodicals, and non-SCSU items can’t be placed on Reserves.
- Books that are missing or not owned by our library can be rush ordered and catalogued for your reserve requirements. Submit your requests as soon as possible to ensure that the books are available for your students.
- Journals not owned by Buley can be obtained through our Interlibrary Loan Department. Please request journal articles from Beth Paris at (203) 392-7038. Allow at least two weeks for the requested articles to arrive at Buley.
- At the end of each semester, professors will receive a letter from the reserve desk concerning their reserve materials. Material can either be kept at reserve for an additional semester or be sent back to you. If we don't hear from you, Circulation will send all personal items back to your campus office and will return all books to the circulating collection.
- Copyright laws (Title 17 United States Code) may prevent you from putting certain materials on electronic or print reserves.
- If you have any reserve questions please call Marsha Clement at (203) 392-5754 or Shirley B. Cavanagh at (203) 392-5768.
