COLLECTION SUPPORT FOR ACADEMIC PROGRAMS |
Southern Connecticut State University is one of four institutions governed by the Board of Trustees for the Connecticut State University System. The University receives its major support from legislative appropriations. Founded in 1893 as the New Haven State Normal School, Southern became a four-year college in 1937, and achieved its reputation during the 1950s and 1960s as a training ground for preparing teachers in virtually every major scholastic area. In 1959, legislation was passed that reorganized Southern into a multipurpose institution, which was followed by a period of expansion into entirely new fields of study and research, and culminated in the institution becoming a university in 1983. Today, Southern Connecticuct State University is composed of five academic schools, and a School of Graduate Studies, which offers graduate level programs in 40 separate disciplines. The Hilton C. Buley Library is committed to acquiring resources in all formats that address the diverse needs of learners enrolled in the academic programs offered by all five of the academic schools, as well as resources that administer selectively to the research interests of individual faculty members. To achive this end, a strong Faculty Library Liaison Program has been created, with individual librarians assigned as liaisons to specific academic departments. These librarians work collaboratively with departmental faculty members assigned to represent the interests of their respective departments with the library, and to build quality collections in all formats through the processes of advisement, assessment, recommendation, and evaluation. In addition, the librarians thoroughly study the Programmatic Profiles and Course Descriptions that appear in both the undergraduate and graduate course catalogs to more completely familiarize themselves with the overall program design in their disciplines, as well as the major topics covered by the course offerings at Southern. In conjunction with these efforts, the library is working diligently to complete the following key documents which are critical to informing the selection process:
