SCHOOL OF BUSINESS |
Southern's Business Adminisration program offers specializations in accounting, business economics and finance, management and management information systems (MIS), marketing, and international business at the undergraduate level, as well as a full M.B.A. Program within the School of Graduate Studies. Diane Tomasko is the designated librarian-liaison for the School of Business. In this capacity, Diane works collaboratively with the following faculty members in the School of Business, who are the designated liaisons to the Buley Library for their departments: Dr. Robert Kirsch, Accounting; Dr. Robert Eldridge, Economics/Finance; Accounting Department In the discipline of Accounting, emphasis has been placed on the acquisition of titles that address both the theory and practice of financial accounting, with a specific focus on the preparation of financial statements according to generally accepted accounting principles, as well as the concepts and theories that underlie the preparation of financial statements. Books that discuss the origin and operations of the SEC, the FASB, the AICPA, and the implications of their authoritative pronouncements have also been acquired. These resources are supplemented by a significant number of titles that address issues of cost accounting as a managerial tool in planning and control, as well as the critically important subject of accounting information systems, including computer-based information systems. While aspects of international accounting are currently more modestly addressed by the collection, additional international accounting resources will be acquired in future buying cycles. Economics and Finance Department To support the Department of Economics and Finance, books have been acquired that provide an appropriate emphasis on the principles of both macroeconomic and microeconomic analysis, including the nature of business cycle fluctuations, and such complex problems as inflation, unemployment and the balance of payments. Books that address the economic history of the U.S., from the Colonial period to the Depression are included, and the collection is quite strong in titles that trace the rise of critically important financial institutions, such as the Federal Reserve system and the SEC. Books on monetary theory and policy and the role of money and banking in determining output, inflation, and interest rates can be easily identified in the collection, as well. A significant number of titles address the important subject of statistics for economics and business, including such specific topics as probability, sampling theory, correlation, and simple regression analysis, some portion of which will address the qualitative and quantitative methods currently employed in forecasting methods in business and economics. The program offered by the Finance Department is focused on the three specializations of Corporation Finance, Investment and Financial Markets, and Depository Institution Management. To effectively support these three specializations, the Buley Library has acquired titles on the basic theories and techniques of financial decision making, employed on a domestic and international basis, including such topics as:
A significant number of titles focus on the subject of investments, including:
Titles on treasury finance, venture capital finance, and principles of real estate and real estate finance complete the collection profile in this discipline. Management and Management Information Systems The Buley Libary works to support the goals of the Management and Management Information Systems Department through the acquisition of a large number of titles that address the general management concerns of planning, organizing, leading and controlling, as well as the diagnosis of managment problems and strategies for conflict resolution in the workplace. Books that address human resources, organizational behavior, business policy and strategy, and the legal environment of business figure prominently in our collection of books on general management and will address such subjects as:
Due to the emphasis on the case study method when studying business policy and strategy, the Buley Library works diligently to acquire prominent business titles that address the management strategies of specific domestic and multinational corporations, offer insightful CEO profiles, or focus on specific vertical market segments. The appropriate use of computers in business is the specialization provided by the Management Information Systems (MIS) specialization at Southern, a discipline that the Buley Library supports through the acquisition of titles dealing with management techniques for MIS, business information systems, global information systems, and quality control management. Books acquired for the MIS program support the specific subjects of production and operations management, as well as purchasing and inventory management; newly acquired titles will frequently address the increasing role of e-commerce within the MIS specialization. Marketing Department Courses offered in the Marketing Department at Southern focus on a concentrated knowledge of marketing theory and its technological applications, as well as the development of specialized expertise in a functional marketing area. Traditional functional areas of marketing that are well represented in the collection include:
The more recent emphasis on E-Marketing has necessitated an increased emphasis on acquiring titles that address online marketing strategies, relationship marketing as practiced online, and various aspects of consumer behavior on the Internet. This will include such topics as 24/7 access demands, and a variety of security and privacy issues. Lastly, the teaching of sports marketing within the Exercise Science Program at Southern, has made the subject of sports marketing a niche specialization in our marketing collection.
