The Southern Connecticut State University administration has increased collections funding for the University Library, thanks in large part to the advocacy efforts of the University Library Committee. This increase presents a timely opportunity to assess collection strengths and weaknesses, to target those areas that are inadequate, to add online resources, to participate in cooperative efforts with other libraries, and to take advantage of opportunities for developing some truly excellent collections. The breakdown of the original materials budget request submitted in February has been revised to reflect current needs, as follows:
| FY2000 Library Materials Budget | Original Allocation | Revised Allocation |
| Books | $684,000 | $592,062 |
| Periodicals | $788,970 | $750,000 |
| Electronic Resources | $50,332 | $200,000 |
| Other (microforms) | $53,760 | $35,000 |
| Total | $1,577,062 | $1,577,062 |
Book Fund Allocations
The Library Collection Development Committee has adjusted book fund allocations for FY2000 based on the following criteria:
No departmental allocation will be less than it was in FY99.
Those allocations that were less than the FY95 to FY97 average expenditure will be increased to the higher level, provided that the FY99 allocation was fully expended.
All figures will be rounded up to the nearest ten dollars.
Specific allocations will be adjusted to reflect curricular changes, new majors, and unique needs.
Reference materials in all subject areas, originally included in the departmental allocation formula, will be funded through a separate allocation. In effect, this increases all departmental allocations.
A separate allocation will be established to replace missing book titles, as determined by the missing book search procedure and in the ongoing inventory of the collections.
Special, one-time allocations will be made to targeted subject areas in support of upcoming accreditation reviews; opportunities to purchase materials at a significant discount or to purchase materials not normally readily available; to support new courses; and to strengthen particular subject areas, as determined by the Collection Development Committee with input from the teaching faculty.
New full-time faculty will be encouraged to submit recommendations for strengthening collections in their disciplines, funded by a separate allocation.
The Director of Library Services will manage a separate allocation to cover special requests, interdisciplinary program needs, opportunities for cooperation and collaboration with other libraries, etc.
| FY2000 Book Fund Allocations |
|
| Departmental Allocations | $328,630 |
| Reference Materials | $140,000 |
| Special Allocations: | |
| Replacement | $20,000 |
| Targeted areas | $38,432 |
| Director’s Fund | $50,000 |
| New Faculty | $15,000 |
| Total Book Fund | $592,062 |
Departmental
allocations will not be split between teaching faculty and library faculty;
the funds have been merged. Librarians
and the department faculty will work together to build the best collections
possible with available resources. Teaching
faculty will be encouraged to recommend titles to the librarian assigned to
coordinate collection development in their subject area.
The library faculty are ultimately responsible for determining the scope
and nature of the collections.
