Goals and Objectives 1:
Develop and maintain a quality collection of library materials reflecting the needs of the academic community.

Review departmental book allocations and adjust to accommodate demonstrated departmental needs and to support areas targeted for collection strengthening.

A significant increase in library materials funding for books covered inflation as well as adjustments to departmental allocations to support basic, ongoing needs.  The funding enabled the Library to begin responding to curricular changes and interdisciplinary needs and to target critical collection weaknesses (Appendix A).  Librarian subject selectors worked with faculty liaisons for each academic department to develop core book collections.  Materials funds carried forward from FY1999 were also applied to the book fund to enable one-time expenditures above the allocations in every discipline.  A total of $826,440 was expended and encumbered for books in FY2000.  Special target areas in FY2000 included reference materials, library science, health sciences, legal reference (Appendix E), sociology/anthropology, foreign languages, and juvenile materials (Appendix F).  A total of 19,366 item records were added to the CONSULS database – 10,865 added to the circulating collection and 8,501 added to reference and special collections (Appendix C).  This represents a major investment in strengthening core collection quantity and quality after many years of serious underfunding.  The administration has reaffirmed its commitment to library collections building by its recent approval of the FY2001 Library Materials Budget Request – the funding will enable the library to continue adding approximately 20,000 new items to the collection.

Strengthen the reference collection – evaluate the currency and usefulness of the materials; deselect, relocate, or shift the collection and relabel shelves.

The Reference Team, assisted by some of the subject selectors from other departments, worked diligently to complete this ambitious project.  The Reference Collection Upgrade Project Team included Shirley Cavanagh, Susan Clerc, Paul Holmer, Ed Hoyer, Fran Hughes, Susan Miller, Clara Ogbaa, Tina Re, Winnie Shyam, and Diane Tomasko.  Over $200,000 was devoted to purchasing current reference materials; 8,111 new items were added.  The result is a comprehensive and up-to-date collection of reference books forming the core of the library’s print collection.  In FY2001, the quality and currency of reference materials will be maintained, with a particular focus on the science and medical collections.

Integrate government documents into the reference, serials, and circulating collection to facilitate access; discard outdated materials.

This project, coordinated by Shirley Cavanagh, began in summer 1999.  All new federal publications received by the library are now immediately integrated into the Library’s other collections: reference, circulating materials, periodicals and microforms.  A total of 859 new government publications were received in FY2000.  Based on a thorough assessment of the collection, 39,964 outdated items were discarded.  The project will be completed in FY2001.

Expand the array of online reference and full text resources; shift CD-ROM resources to web access as available.

A significant increase in the allocation for electronic resources enabled the library to take advantage of consortial pricing opportunities, to respond to the shift from print to electronic resources in many disciplines, and to expand the scope of resources available from remote locations.  Susan Clerc, Electronic Resources Coordinator, developed an Electronic Resources Collection Development Policy (Appendix G).  Four titles formerly on CD-ROM were shifted to online subscriptions: Books in Print from Bowker, Social Work Abstracts, Sport Discus, and Ulrich’s International Periodical Guide. Ten new electronic resources were acquired in FY2000.
