FY2002 GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Develop, organize, and maintain a quality collection
of library materials reflecting the needs of the academic community.
- Continue to build library collections to meet A-level ALA quantitative standards
- Complete the integration of government documents into the reference, serials,
and circulating collection to facilitate access
- Complete the inventory of the circulating collection; update the online
catalog database and replace missing materials as appropriate
- Update the collection development policies for all collections
- Begin integration of special collections into the library database
- Establish a preservation program for general and special collections
- Integrate bibliographic records for electronic resources into the CONSULS
database
- Expand links from the Library’s web page and catalog to other full-text
resources and databases
- Work with subject selectors to establish appropriate profiles for approval
plans
Provide services designed to support the University’s
mission, to facilitate the use of library resources, and to promote information
literacy.
- Establish or update written service policies and procedures
- Offer library orientation to faculty, administrators, and staff
- Develop and implement a comprehensive library instruction program that meets
the current major needs of the curriculum
- Develop information literacy competencies for application in library instruction
classes and other courses within the curriculum
- Expand interlibrary loan services to include mediated and patron-initiated
document delivery via electronic database and table-of-contents services
- Assess information needs and develop resources and services to meet the
unique requirements of distance learners
- Design and implement an electronic reserve system for students and faculty
Staff, organize, and develop human resources to encourage
optimal performance and to enhance effective communication.
- Organize in-house staff development programs focusing on areas of direct
interest and/or applicability to all library staff, e.g., disability awareness,
safety and security, communication, teamwork, etc.
- Support targeted staff development activities that support the Library’s
goals and objectives and to retrain staff to handle new responsibilities
- Develop a five-year staffing plan to meet ALA standards and the individual
needs of the SCSU community
Maintain facilities and equipment to provide an efficient,
comfortable, accessible, and safe environment.
- Implement equipment solutions to security problems throughout the library
building
- Assess the library’s physical accessibility according to ADA minimum standards
- Complete the refurbishment of the Library’s public spaces
- Design, with the Department of Facilities, a building program to support
the mission of the library
Promote effective library communications throughout
the university community.
- Establish and/or update written policies and procedures
- Expand publicity through a range of promotional avenues, e.g. brochures,
announcements, articles in campus publications, email, etc.
- Work with the University Library Committee and departmental liaisons to
improve communication with faculty
- Plan a faculty open house to publicize the Library’s activities and plans
- Develop a library newsletter to inform the campus community of library resources,
services, and initiatives
- Establish contacts with the Alumni Association to support the lifelong learning
needs of the University’s alumni
- Maintain appropriate communications with area high school groups regularly
visiting Buley Library

Initiatives
The Department of Library Services will develop
and implement a strategic plan to meet the library research needs of all academic
programs, students, faculty and staff, with particular attention to these initiatives:
- Continue to progress in meeting the American
Library Association’s A-level quantitative standards for collections, staffing,
and facilities
- Evaluate and strengthen the library collection
and library service needs of Schools and departments
- Develop comprehensive electronic, print
and media collections to support teaching, learning and research activities
of students and faculty
- Design and implement an electronic reserve
system for students and faculty to expand the course reserve services
- Expand interlibrary loan services to
include mediated and patron-initiated document delivery via electronic
database and table-of-contents services
- Assess the information needs and develop
resources and services to meet the unique library requirements of distance
learners
- Integrate new information technologies into
library instruction and services
- Develop and implement a comprehensive
library instruction program for all students
- Create an electronic classroom for library
instruction to support demonstration and hands-on training in online information
resources
- Expand our library instruction program
to target students of all levels
- Develop information literacy concepts
for application in library instruction classes and to support the curriculum
- Expand cooperative initiatives to support
shared library resources and services
- Design and implement, with the Department
of Facilities, a building program for the Buley Library addition to support
the mission of the library
