Most databases provide URL's for linking directly to a full text article from a reading list or other website. Unfortunately, every database company does it differently (and a few don't do it at all). This guide will lay out basic instructions for finding the full text link for most of the databases to which Buley Library subscribes, and list the ones that do not have linking abilities.

Most databases identify "legitimate" users by the IP address of the computer from which they are logging in. Any computer connected to the campus network should be covered within the campus IP range and allowed into the databases with no problem. The Proxy Server is the web server that allows users off campus to connect to our subscription databases. The Proxy Server acts by redirecting all communication with the database through the server, housed at CCSU. Users log in, using their campus ID number and Library PIN, and the server authenticates them to the database. The URLs for the databases are modified in a particular way to allow this to happen. The main domain part of the URL (up to the first / within the address) is modified with a prefix and a suffix: http://www.URL.com/ becomes http://0-www.URL.com.csulib.ctstateu.edu/. In order for the article to be accessible to off campus users it must be in this format.
While most URL's displayed within the databases have the proxy server prefix/suffix, article records emailed from the databases may not have the correct format.
The simplest method of linking to articles is to use the Journal Locator/Find Article @ SCSU service. If you find full text via the Find Article @ SCSU links within the databases (
), simply copy the address bar URL from the page with the Article links:
If you use the Journal Locator to find full text of an article, first look up the journal title, then click Look Up Article and enter the volume number, pages, etc. The results screen should look similar to the above, and can be linked to using the Address Bar URL.
In general, when you are looking at a page within a database, the URL in the address bar contains a session number or other time-specific information and cannot be used to link back to the article. In some cases, the URL in the address bar will work. In a few cases, there is no way to link directly to an article.
Most of the links provided go to the article record, rather than the actual full text. Links in the article record (HTML Full Text, PDF Full Text, etc.) will lead to the full text.

The ACM provides a permanent URL with each record, marked DOI Bookmark.
The URL's for these must be constructed, and will lead to the PDF copy of the article. Add the DOI number to the base URL:

The DOI number is found on the article record screen (click on the title of the article or the View Record link from the results list).
All CONSULS Library Catalog links can be used directly out of the address bar, but many searches produce very long, complex URLs. The cleanest URLs are produced by adding the ISBN or ISSN to the base search URL for publisher numbers:

NOTE: The CQ Researcher article will appear in a pop-up window over the CQ Researcher main page and may be affected by pop-up blockers.

All Ebsco databases (Academic Search Premier, Business Source Premier, ERIC, MEDLINE, etc.) provide simple URL's within the individual record screen for each article.
You can also link to searches (or rather, to the results page) by using the URL that is displayed when you click the "Display link to this search" link at the top of the results page.
Emerald's full text articles can be linked by modifying the URL on the article description screen (click on the article title from your results.) Note: Be sure to check to see if the full text is available. All results have a View HTML link. Abstract only articles have a little green A icon

The FirstSearch Databases (including Article 1st and WilsonSelect Plus) provide a linking service that will email the correct URL to you.
Click on the link marked "Durable URL for this record". A pop-up window will open with the URL.
Click on "Durable Links" on the Citation or Text pages.
JSTOR provides a non-proxied URL for each article in the search results list. You will need to add the proxy information, however: replace http://links.jstor.org/ with http://0-links.jstor.org.csulib.ctstateu.edu/ at the beginning of the URL and leave everything else the same.
Click on "Durable URL for this text".
Click on Record Number (MRxxxxxx) to view the abstract. Click on the Make Link link and copy the URL from the address bar.
Click on the Show Static URL button below the cover art; links will appear below each track title.
Netlibrary URL's to individual electronic books (e-books) must be constructed using the following pattern:

Replace xxxxxx with the Product ID: View the eBook and choose eContent Details.

The URL from the address bar for a dictionary entry contains information about the search your used to find the entry, as well as the address of the entry itself. The address to the plain entry ends at the first entry number.

Click on Copy Link for a pop-up window with the URL.

Science Direct does not provide the actual text of the linking URL. It provides a DOI link (an international standard document identification). You must copy the link using the browser copy functions.
*For formatting purposes, these links have "soft returns" (Alt-Enter in most Windows programs) after each line. If you copy the link, you may need to copy each line separately.
