Evaluating News:
How do you tell news from commentary, or even outright falsehoods?
- Can you find the same story on another news site? Be careful, some places simply re-publish stories, so look for a different story on the same topic.
- Check the facts! Are there sources given for statistics, experimental results, or anything else reported as fact? (Use these same techniques to evaluate those sources.) Can you verify any of the "facts" in different sources?
- Evaluate the source: a story produced by a general news source is likely to be less biased than one from a speciality organization. Press releases and white papers from corporations are less likely to report negative findings against their parent company. What else has the author or publishing agency written/published? How do they describe themselves? Are there sources of funding listed?
- What do others say about the article or the author/publisher? (Use the same techniques to evaluate these evaluators!)
