Internet Resources
Contents
This bibliography attempts to highlight some of
the major internet sites for American and English Literature. Included are world
wide web sites, gopher sites, listservs, newsgroups and homepages of various
authors. The first part of this bibliography contains electronic texts
and general literature information followed by American Literature sites and
then English Literature sites, each further categorized by genre. The final
part of the bibliography contains numerous home pages devoted to individual
authors from both literatures. Readers are welcome to email suggestions or comments

Electronic Texts
- Alex: A Catalogue of Electronic
Texts on the Internet Alex indexes over 700 books and shorter texts and
retrieves these documents full-text on the Internet. Does not include serials.
Has search feature where you can enter author or title.
- Internet Classic Archive A searchable
collection of almost 400 classical Greek and Roman texts in English (complete)
with user-provided commentary.
- The On-Line Books Page
A storehouse of on-line books and other documents which includes more than
1800 English works in various formats. A list of on-line publishers and retailers
is available. Also includes a list of banned books on-line and links to other
book repositories.
- Project Bartleby Includes
texts and reference works as well as the poetical works of Dickinson, Eliot,
Frost, Keats, Shelley, Whitman, Wordsworth, Yeats, etc. It is one of the largest
collections of on-line literature currently available on the net.
- Project Gutenberg Home
Page Project Gutenberg is an ongoing project to build an enormous library
of electronic books which could be viewed or downloaded for free.
General Literature Sources
- The English-Language Literature
Page at UCSD This is an excellent page consisting of literature-oriented
primarily devoted to English and American literature. Other things of interest
include literary electronic journals, discussion groups, electronic texts,
etc. Good starting point for research.
- English
Literature: A Select Bibliography of Reference Sources This exhaustive
guide from Yale University includes internet resources and print resources.
The latter is categorized by type of source, genre, and time frame.
- The Internet Public Library: Literary
Criticism Contains critical and biographical information about authors
and their works.
- Literary Resources on
the Net This is another page which deals mainly with English and American
Literature sources on the net and is limited to collections of information
useful to academics. It is possible to search this site by literary time frame
or literary genre.
- Literature
Resources from Carnegie Mellon University This site contains miscellaneous
resources for students and faculty - book length non-fiction and miscellaneous
literatures, calls for conference papers and journal articles, readings in
cultural studies and critical theory, a collection of modern and classical
plays, works and discussion on renaissance studies, novels and short story,
resources in language studies and theory, and literary events.
- Literature Webliography
Contains resources for the study of literature and bibliography, library catalogs,
newsgroups, periodicals, style guides, electronic books and numerous literary
links.

General Resources This is another excellent site for literary research.
Contains general criticisms on authors and specific periods, text archives
and other comprehensive resources, journals listservs, newsgroups, English
and comparative literature departments page and a course page enumerating
courses and syllabi.
- World Wide Web Subject Catalog
-- English and American Literature Information on various topics in English
and American Literature can be found here. This site also contains information
on the origin and evolution of fairy tales, European medieval drama as well
as numerous sites related to writing. An outstanding resource for lovers of
literature.
- Yahoo
--Literature Yahoo is an extensive site that contains
special pages devoted to banned books, children's books, electronic literature,
reading groups, book reviews and information on authors of various genres
of literature.
American Literature -- General Resources
- American
Authors on the Web Contains links to pages devoted to various American
authors. Information is classified chronologically as well.
- American
Literary Classics Contains full texts of books including some rare books
and manuscripts. Sponsored by the William Reese Company.
- American Literature
and Culture Resources (Columbia University) Contains links to American
Studies resources, associations, e-texts, Native American sites, Early American
Literature materials, Nineteenth-century materials, museums and libraries,
Women's Studies materials and Interesting courses using the web.
- American
Literature to 1900 Contains full text of works by Frank Baum, Henry
James, Herman Melville, Jack London, James Cooper, Kate Chopin, Louisa May
Alcott, Mark Twain and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Includes biographical and
critical information on Emily Dickinson and other women writers.
- Hypertexts - An
Electronic Literature Site This site from the University of Virginia contains
information on Henry Adams, Charles Brown, Stephen Crane, Theodore Dressier,
Stowe, Wilson, and others, including the text of their works.
- Jack Lynch's
American Literature Page A very useful source of literary links
including links to mailing lists, Voice of the Shuttle American Literature
page, American Verse Project, Native American Literature, University of Virginia
literary pages, and extensive information on individual authors and poets.
- Online American
Literature Resources This site provides links to general American
literature sites, American literature of the colonial period, and the eighteenth
and nineteenth centuries.
- Society for the Study of American
Women Writers This site was established to promote the study of American
women writers through research, teaching and publication. Contains links to
archives, newsletters, conferences, announcements, listservs and other information.
- Useful Links:
American Literature This site from Keele University links to virtual libraries,
teaching resources and other key American literature web sites.
American Literature -- Drama and Theater
- Media, Music, Movies
and the Performing Arts Under Performing Arts are links to major theater
sites such as Theatre Central, Playbill, Performing Arts Online, and Jogle's
Favorite Theater Related sites.

Drama and Theatre Resources Here one can find links to Theater Sites page
at CMU, Yahoo's Drama and Playwright links and links to Modern and Contemporary
Dramatists.

This is a central site for contacting and communicating with theatre professionals
all over the world. The directory is searchable by keyword, location, and
name.
- The
World Wide Web Virtual Library: Theater and Drama This site points to
resources in more than 50 countries around the world for professionals, academics,
and amateurs of all ages.

Performing Arts/Theater This is an excellent storehouse of information
on relating on actors, acting, actresses, awards, drama therapy, drama and
employment, events, history of drama, theater companies, shadow theater, and
much more.
American Literature -- Poetry
- American
Poetry Full-Text Database Here you can find complete poetical works of
over 200 poets from the earliest American poets of the seventeenth century
to the beginnings of modernism. In addition to the complete works of the poets,
all accompanying text, introductions and prefaces are also included.
- The Electronic Poetry Center (Buffalo)
The EPC contains links to electronic resources in poetry produced in Buffalo
and elsewhere around the world. Also contains links to electronic poetry journals.
- The Internet
Poetry Archive Made available by the University of North Carolina, this
site is an archive of selected poems from a number of contemporary poets.
The goal of the project is to give teachers and students of poetry new ways
of presenting and studying these poets and their texts.
- Modern
and Contemporary American Poetry This page is maintained by Al Fireis,
a specialist in Modern American Literature and Professor of English, University
of Pennsylvania. Contains excellent links to other poetry sites.
- Poet's House Poet's House is a literary
center and poetry archive which contains a 40,000 volume poetry collection.
The library is free and open to the public and includes books, journals, chapbooks,
audios, video tapes, and electronic media. It is the most comprehensive open
house collection of poetry books in the United States.
- Voice of the Shuttle: Web Page for Humanities
Research A most comprehensive site for the humanities with links to other
very useful literature pages from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present.
American Literature -- Teaching Resources
- Electronic Archives
Home Page The Electronic Archives Page contains essays, syllabi, bibliographies,
and other resources related to American Literature and Culture Studies for
teaching the literatures of the United States. The archives are sponsored
and maintained by Georgetown University's American Studies Program.
Native American Literature
- Native
American Literature This website provides biographical information on
Native American authors and bibliographies of their published works. There
are also links to online resources including interviews, online texts, and
tribal websites.
- NativeWeb Home Page The purpose of
this page is to provide a link to Earth's indigenous people. Here you can
find links to Native American literature, newsletters and journals, organizations,
bibliographies and historic materials.
- Storytellers: Native American
Authors Online Here can be found a listing of native American authors
in alphabetical order, by tribal listing, book reviews and awards, traditional
storytelling and links to other sites on native American authors.
English Literature -- General Resources
- The Camelot Project
This is a database of Arthurian texts, images, bibliographies and other
related information. This project is sponsored by the University of Rochester.
- Eighteenth Century Resources
on the Net This is an excellent site for English Literature. Includes
extensive listings for the following -- Biblical, Classical, Medieval, Renaissance,
Restoration, 18th Century, Romantic, Victorian, 20th Century, British, Irish,
American, Other National Literatures, Hypertext, Theater and Drama, Theory
and General.
- Eighteenth Century Studies This site
discusses eighteenth century studies from the perspectives of literary and
cultural studies. Novels, plays, memoirs, treatises and poems of the period
can be found here along with criticism about the works.
- English Literature
On the Web Here one can find e-text archives, information on children's
books and authors, medieval English literature, Anglo-Saxon literature, information
on British authors and literature of various time periods such as the seventeenth,
eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
- Labyrinth
Library: Middle English The Labyrinth provides free access to information
in medieval studies with several links to other global servers that connect
to databases, services and electronic texts. This site will soon include a
variety of new resources such as on-line forums, professional directories
and news, on-line bibliographies and an on-line university of teachers and
scholars available for electronic conferencing.
- Luminarium Luminarium is an excellent
resource for Middle English Literature, Renaissance literature, and 17th-century
literature.
- Old English
Literature This site contains works such as Beowulf along with criticism
about these works as well as numerous prose, poems and reference works in
middle English.
- Post-Colonial
Literature Post-Colonial Literature contains works written in English
by citizens of former British colonies other than the U.S. and Canada. Some
non-western literature may also be included.
- Romantic Circles
This website is devoted to the literature and culture of the Romantic period.
- Victoria Research Web Victoria
Research Web is dedicated to the study of nineteenth century British Literature
and is a valuable resource for students, teachers and researchers who maybe
studying the period. Links to other Victorian sites can be found here as well
as several writings of Victorian women writers.
- Voice of the Shuttle -- English
Literature This page is an excellent site for accessing information on
the literature of the eighteenth century. You can find general resources,
authors, works, projects, and criticism about the writing of the period.

- British Poetry 1780-1910:
A Hypertext Archive of Scholarly Editions This site contains scholarly
editions of books of poetry published between 1780-1910 and is meant for scholars
interested in Romantic and Victorian literature.
- Poetry
Resources Contains links to poetry book reviews, interviews with individual
poets, essays, letters, poetry festivals and exhibits.
- Poetry Archives Contains thousands
of classical poems searchable by author, first line and keywords in title.
The site also contains a discussion forum.
- A Timeline of English
Poetry 658-2003 This site contains old English, middle English, and new
English poems. Indexes by poet, tile, first line, and keyword and has links
to criticism on poetry.
- Twentieth Century
Poetry Resources Created by Ishikawa of Kobe University in Japan, this
site provides pages that contain photographs, biographical sketches, and bibliographies
of selected twentieth century poets.
- Yahoo --
Arts: Humanities: Literature: Genres: Poetry Yahoo is an excellent source
that not only contains full-text works of all the noted poets but also works
of non-published and lesser known poets. Has links to anthologies, awards,
children's poetry, haiku and journals dealing with poetry.

- Internet Speculative Fiction Database
The ISFDB is an effort to catalog works of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror.
It links together various types of bibliographic data: author bibliographies,
publication bibliographies, award listings, magazine content listings, anthology
and collection content listings, yearly fiction, indexes, and forthcoming
books.
- The Locus Index to Science
Fiction This site contains one of the most comprehensive bibliographies
of science fiction and fantasy for the period covered. Includes news, reviews,
resources, and perspectives of science fiction, fantasy, and horror.
- MIT
Science Fiction Society Homepage This is the world's largest collection
of science fiction. Contains some foreign language material and more than
90% of all science fiction, horror and fantasy related stuff published in
English. Includes an extensive magazine collection. Membership dues.
- Science Fiction and Fantasy
Research Database This is an index to over 60,000 items about science
fiction and fantasy compiled by H.W. Hall. History, criticism, commentary,
fan writings, and some reviews are all included.

Collection Home Page This is the research library of the Science Fiction
Foundation and is the largest resource of science fiction and related material
in the United Kingdom.

Page Another excellent page with links to useful information on science
