All microforms (except government documents) are housed in BU 023--ground floor adjacent to Periodicals Room. The microform collection consists of both microfilm and microfiche. It includes 4 ongoing newspaper subscriptions, some 275 ongoing periodical subscriptions, as well as thousands of periodicals and newspaper backfiles. There are also many special collections. Access to most microforms is through CONSULS, our online public access catalog, or through special collection indexes housed in the Microforms Room. The room is open the same hours as the library. It is self-serve. Often there is an attendant to help you locate material, or show you how to use the readers or reader/printers. If not, help may be obtained at the Information desk in the Periodicals Room or at the Reference desk on the first floor.
We encourage you to retrieve your own microforms. There are instructions by most readers and all reader/printers as how to use the machines. When you have finished using the microforms, please place your material in one of the several return boxes placed around the room. Please do not replace microforms in drawers. If you need help, and there is no room attendant, please ask for help at the Information desk in the Periodicals Room or at the Reference desk on the first floor.
Currently, there are 8 reader/printers to use when making copies from either fiche or film. The copies are 10 cents each. Although there is a quarter changer in the Microforms Room it is a good idea to bring a roll of dimes with you to facilitate copying. There are no dollar bill changers in the library.
All microFILM is in the gold cabinets. It is arranged into 6 categories. CURRENT NEWSPAPERS are in the blue labelled drawers in both the upper and lower drawers; PERIODICALS are in the white labelled drawers, all in lower cabinets, SPECIAL COLLECTIONS are in yellow labelled drawers in upper cabinets as are INDEXES AND ABSTRACTS in orange labelled drawers, Nineteenth Century Periodicals in green labelled drawers and Old and Miscellaneous Newspapers in pink labelled drawers. Within each category material is arranged alphabetically by title.
MicroFICHE is kept primarily in the grey and black cabinets opposite the gold cabinets. PERIODICALS are in the first grey cabinet as you enter the area. ERIC DOCUMENTS (ED numbers) form the largest collection, beginning in the black cabinets, and continuing into the grey cabinets. The documents are filed by their 6 digit ED number. Microfiche SPECIAL COLLECTIONS are filed alphabetically by their title and are housed in the black cabinets by the back door. Fiche filed by DEWEY DECIMAL NUMBERS come between the collections and the start of the Eric documents. COLLEGE CATALOGS are kept in the beige cabinet preceding the periodicals on fiche.
