Journals - either full open access or open access to back issues.
General Open Access Journals:
Directory of Open Access Journals
http://www.doaj.org/ - over 1000 scholarly (though not necessarily peer
reviewed) journals with full access to all issues. Some of these are searchable
by article keywords, but most are only accessible via journal title or subject.
FreeFullText.com
http://www.freefulltext.com/ - over 7000 scholarly journals that have
some full text access. This may include selected articles and sample issues
only.
Highwire Press Archive http://highwire.stanford.edu/lists/freeart.dtl
- a list of journals published in association with Highwire Press that have
at least some full text available for free, including temporary trial access.
FindArticles
http://www.findarticles.com/ - 900 resources, mostly popular, trade, and
news magazines. Some "premium" content requiring trial subscriptions
to fee-based collections. There is a "free only" search check box.
NOTE: Many of the Premium articles are available in our full text databases;
use the Journal
Locator to locate the full text.
Research Now http://researchnow.bepress.com/ - Search the "quasi
open access" BEPress Journals (mostly Business and Law) plus several
dozen institutional repositories for materials from Aerospace to Urban Planning.
A Note on Google
Scholar - Google Scholar is Google's answer to article databases.
Google Scholar includes journal tables of contents from several major publishers,
and "scholarly" content from the open web, but it is not a good
Open Access discovery tool. While GS creates a reasonable (recent content
is limited) index, there is little full text directly available. Most links
go to publishers' "Pay by Article" order forms. Before paying for
any article found via Google Scholar, be sure to check in the SCSU Journal
Locator to see if the full text is available from one of our subscription
databases. You may also be able to get the article for free, though with a
delay, through Interlibrary
Loan.
You can streamline this process by adding Southern Connecticut State University as a Library in Google Scholar Preferences. When an article is recognizable as coming from a particular journal, a "Full Text @ Buley" link will appear linking into the Journal Locator. You can add several libraries at once, if you have access to other library collections.
Subject Based Journal Article Collections:
BioMed Central
http://www.biomedcentral.com/ - over 100 Open Access journals in the life
sciences and medicine. Also searchable via PubMed:
PubMed Central http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=PMC
- a digital archive of biomedical literature, sponsored and maintained by
the National Library of Medicine. Some very recent material may be indexed
before the online access is available. Full text articles are linked directly
from the PubMed
version of MEDLINE.
Free Full Text Journals in Chemistry http://www.abc.chemistry.bsu.by/current/fulltext.htm
- Online chemistry journals available either in full or in a trial. Separate
lists for educational and Russian journals.
Eprints in the Scientific and Technical fields http://www.osti.gov/eprints/ -
journal articles, technical and conference papers in disciplines of interest
to the US Department of Energy.
SAILS e-prints
http://eprints.bo.cnr.it/ - papers, articles and technical literature
from 72 (as of Oct, 2004) open access repositories.
CogPrints
http://cogprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk/ - papers in psychology, neuroscience,
linguistics, computer science, philosophy, biology, and other disciplines
related to cognitive science.
Scirus http://www.scirus.com/srsapp/advanced/index.jsp
- Scirus is a search engine devoted to science subjects. On the advanced search
page, you can limit your search to articles. If you also uncheck the "All
journal sources" box, you will get only web based materials, including
many full text articles in institutional repositories, such as University
of Toronto's T-Space.
(To search the journal literature covered by the "All journal sources",
log in to the SCSU database Science
Direct and get access to our subscribed journal articles by using the
Search button and the Journal tab for searching.)
BEPress - Berkeley Electronic Press http://www.bepress.com/alljournals.html
- a collection of Economics, Business, Marketing, and Law journals with a
scattering of political science, public affairs, science/technology, and humanities
titles. NOTE: BEPress uses a "quasi-open
access" model where users are required to fill out a guest form identifying
their local library, which then gets subscription information. BEPress journals
are searchable through ResearchNow.
Social Science Research Network http://www.ssrn.com/
- abstracts and full papers both submitted by the authors and harvested from
partner publishers' databases. Topics include Accounting, Economics, Information
Systems, Legal Scholarship, Management, Marketing, Negotiation, and Social
Insurance. Search
by keyword or browse
by topic. Some articles are pay-for-access.
Science Accelerator http://www.scienceaccelerator.gov/ - abstracts and full papers primarily from the Department of Energy programs and projects, covering most areas of science and science policy.
