SOCIAL WORK

Library PIN

You will need a Library PIN number for using the databases from off campus, requesting books from other CSU campuses, viewing electronic reserves, looking at your library record, and renewing books online. Click here if you have never set one up before. If you had set up a PIN previously that you have forgotten, call the circulation desk at 392-5756 to have it reset.

Online Reserves

Online reserves can be accessed from anywhere. Access online reserves by entering your professor's name here. Look for your class ending in ELE (ELE stands for electronic). After you click on the class, you will be asked for your student ID number and Library PIN.

Reference Books

Reference books are good sources to consult when you are beginning your research. They provide a "big picture" overview of a topic that can be very difficult to find in journal articles. They provide definitions of concepts and overviews of a topic. Some reference books are available online.

Locating Books

Next, look for books in CONSULS, the library catalog. A good place to start is with a keyword search, which allows you to combine concepts, such as children and welfare reform, or women and drug abuse.

Remember that CONSULS is the catalog for all of the CSU campuses, so before you go to the shelf make sure the catalog says the item you want is at SCSU. If you see an item at any of the other campuses that you need, you can request it by clicking on "Request Book" and entering your student ID number and Library PIN number. The book will be shipped here within 3-5 working days.

Locating Journal Articles

Access our journal article databases by clicking on the Search Databases link from the library homepage. If you are off campus you will need to enter your student ID number and library PIN.

Social Work Abstracts is now part of EBSCO. This means lots of full text articles.

You can also combine Social Work Abstracts with the following databases to search simultaneously:

If the full text article is not immediately available, click on the icon and it will check to see if the full text is available in any of our other databases.

Locating an Article When You Have the Citation

To find whether a particular journal appears full-text in any of our databases or in the library, check the Journal Locator on the home page. The Journal Locator will tell you if Buley Library subscribes to a journal or if it is available online in one of the databases.

Locating Information About Tests

Most of these sources do not contain actual tests. They contain reviews and descriptions of tests. Because tests are often copyrighted and for sale, they can be difficult to obtain without paying for them.

Mental Measurements and Tests in Print are available online through Ebsco.
